Company Overview

ESD Services Limited (ESDSL) is a joint venture between Hutchison Whampoa Limited and Hewlett-Packard HK SAR Limited. The company was appointed to implement the government's Electronic Service Delivery Scheme and launched an award-winning bilingual portal, ESDlife (www.esdlife.com) in January 2001. Through the establishment of a vast digital information infrastructure, ESDSL has focused on providing a one-stop shop for public and commercial electronic services, as well as solutions that represent a combination of vision, commitment, industry know-how, business insight and e-commerce expertise.

Round-the-clock public services

ESDlife has pioneered the provision of both public and commercial services in Hong Kong. It offers more than 200 public services from over 50 departments and public agencies, including appointment booking for the issuing of smart identity cards, booking of sports facilities, marriage registration, filing of tax returns, and purchases from the government bookstore.

Expansion of the target group

Growing in tandem with the level of Internet penetration among Hong Kong households, the number of people using ESDlife services online for government transactions has increased dramatically. Apart from wedding couples, sports lovers and students, the demographic group of ESDlife users has been expanding since the Smart ID Card replacement exercise began in August 2003. What¡¦s more, the launch of a unique Business Entry Portal (www.business.gov.hk), which offers one-stop access to business information from the public and private sectors, marks ESDlife¡¦s evolution towards B2B and brings even greater value to its overseas business partners.

The unique customer-centric nature of ESDlife distinguishes it from other information portals. ESDlife visitors are goal-driven. They are ready to complete government-related transactions, to make payments or simply to shop. This has resulted in the ESDlife portal recording among the highest number of payment-required transactions in Hong Kong.

ESDSL launched the e-shop initiative in 2002 and now offers a wide variety of products and services. The provision of government services along with online payment solutions provides a strong customer base for ESDlife¡¦s online shopping business. The remarkable growth in e-shop transactions since its launch demonstrates that users of government services are eager to shop online. This has helped expand the market for online shopping and e-commerce, in line with the government¡¦s vision for Hong Kong.
